Change or remove a heading

Remove a structural boundary while keeping the writing that follows it.

You decide that Outside should continue the previous scene. Remove its heading to join the writing, or turn the heading into ordinary text if you want to keep those words.

  1. Place the cursor in the Scene heading you want to remove.
  2. Beside the block, open Block actions.
  3. Choose Delete scene heading.
  4. Read the confirmation, then choose Delete heading.

The heading is removed. Its following writing stays and belongs to the previous scene. The removed scene’s synopsis and place assignments are removed too; the shared places themselves remain available.

This action removes the boundary, rather than deleting the scene’s dialogue and directions. Ordinary deletion keys protect scene boundaries, so use the explicit action when you want to remove one.

The first Scene heading cannot be deleted through this action. It anchors the opening scene. You can edit its title instead.

Use Open structure in attribute manager at the top of the Structure sidebar. Select the scene, then use the Delete scene heading button and confirm Delete heading.

It has the same effect and the same restriction on deleting the first heading.

Keep the heading’s words as ordinary text

Section titled “Keep the heading’s words as ordinary text”
  1. Place the cursor in the Scene heading.
  2. Open Change block type in the toolbar.
  3. Choose Stage direction, or another writing type that fits the text.
  4. Confirm Convert heading when asked.

The heading’s words remain as the chosen block type. The scene boundary disappears, and its synopsis and place assignments are removed. Use Cancel in the confirmation if you want to keep the scene unchanged.

For example, change Outside into the Stage direction Outside, Robin waits for Alex. after conversion. The words now describe action within the surrounding script instead of starting another scene.

In the Structure sidebar, find the act and use the Delete act button beside its name.

Only the Act heading is removed. Its scenes and writing stay in their current order. They join the preceding act, if one exists; otherwise they appear without an act above them. This button performs the removal immediately.
